It’s Women’s History Month and we’re so excited to pay our respects to the many Black women who have kept this crazy world afloat since its inception: media personalities. From Oprah Winfrey to Tamron Hall, we’ve been blessed to witness a multitude of Black women dominate the media industry in all of their glory while staying true to themselves. It’s no secret that the media can be known to paint a biased picture of Blackness, contributing to a harmful narrative, but our superheroes, these Black women, have saved the day on more than one occasion. Honing in on their natural charisma and professional skillset, these media mavens have proven time and time again that they have our backs and it’s only right that we return the favor.
1. Oprah Winfrey
Hailed the “Queen of Daytime TV,” Oprah Winfrey is probably one of the most revered media personalities that we’ve seen. From impactful interviews to authentic storytelling, Winfrey has paved the way for so many Black women after her to follow their dreams.
2. Tamron Hall
Tamron Hall is known to many as a former correspondent for NBC News, and now she’s building a lane of her own as the host of her very own show, The Tamron Hall Show. Hall brings killer fashions and dynamic interviews to each episode, and we love to see it.
3. Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks may have gotten her start in modeling, but for a while, she had a reputation as a talented talk show host who focused on women’s empowerment. Banks’ show, The Tyra Banks Show, still rings bells to this day as a platform where women were celebrated.
4. Wendy Williams
Wendy Williams is a household name and has been ever since her days on the radio. Transitioning into the television market later in her career, Williams employed that same magic that made her into a radio hit as a launchpad to becoming one of the most talked-about television personalities.
5. Queen Latifah
Queen Latifah is one of the greatest multi-hyphenates to ever exist, so it only makes sense that she has the title of talk show host under her belt. The Queen Latifah Show was ahead of its time, debuting in 1999 and again for a revamped run in 2013.
6. Abby Phillip
If you’ve ever watched CNN, you know exactly who Abby Phillip is. Phillip, known for her intricate and precise reporting style, is a senior political correspondent for CNN and does a fabulous job of keeping us all abreast of what’s going on politically.
It’s such a beautiful feeling to have had these legendary Black women on our television screens at one point. We can’t wait to see what the next generation looks like.
